BP has announced a final investment decision on its largest green hydrogen project yet at its Castellon refinery in Spain — but details on what exactly will be built and when remain unclear.

“At Castellon, together with our joint venture partner [Iberdrola], we are taking our first FID to develop and produce industrial scale green hydrogen at our Castellon refinery,” BP CEO Murray Auchincloss said during a second-quarter results presentation.

But while a February 2023 announcement of its HyVal cluster had suggested €2bn would be spent on 2GW of electrolyser capacity at the Castelleon refinery by 2030, with at least 200MW installed by 2027, the oil major has told Hydrogen Insight that it will only invest in 25MW of capacity.
