29 April 2025Siemens Mobility has begun producing hydrogen-powered trains set to be used on the Südostabyernbahn network in Germany.
From 2026, three 2-car Mireo Plus H trains will serve eight stations on the Mühldorf (Upper Bavaria) – Tüßling – Burghausen non-electrified route spanning 32.2km.
The train features a roof-mounted fuel cell and lithium-ion batteries to ensure zero-emission operations. Reportedly, it will boast 1.7MW in drive power that enables it to reach a top speed of 140km/h.
The hydrogen trains, ordered by the State of Bavaria, are expected to replace diesel trains that are currently operating from the network’s Mühldorf hub. Deutsche Bahn (DB) plans to build an electrolysis plant in Mühldorf that will be completely powered by green electricity.
“Hydrogen trains are an important block for DB on its path to achieving climate neutrality,” claimed Cornelia Würtz, Managing Director of DB RegioNetz Verkehrs.
