On Wednesday (1st February), an open letter was sent by Haffner Energy, Hydrogen Europe, and 21 other signatories to the Swedish presidency, European Commission and European Parliament urging legislators to include hydrogen produced by biomass conversion as a means to fulfill binding hydrogen targets in industry and transport.
Current rules within the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) only allow the use of Renewable Fuels of non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs), such as those produced through water-based electrolysis, to the exclusion of biomass-derived hydrogen.
The letter argues that an “RFNBO-only” approach would create huge additional demand for renewable electricity, pressure that the inclusion of biomass would help alleviate.
