5 February 2025Belgium will allow green H2 used in oil refining to count towards climate targets without correction factors, while planning to lobby EU to loosen RFNBO definition
After seven months of negotiations, Belgium has finally formed a new federal government, headed by Bart De Wever of the conservative New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), which has promised to support “all forms of low-carbon hydrogen production”.
In a document outlining the new administration’s policies, the government outlines backing for not just domestic H2 pipelines and storage, but links with neighbouring countries in order to act as a hub and monitor energy prices.
Belgium will also transpose the updated Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) into national legislation, with an eye towards allowing green hydrogen’s use in refining “without restrictions” to count towards an EU target for 1% of transport fuel to come from renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs), ie, green hydrogen and its derivatives, by 2030.
