The position offered concerns analysis, optimal management and demonstration of hybrid energy storage systems (HESS). The candidate will provide support to the Center on Sustainable Energy in both European and national projects, in particular he/she will be involved in a recently funded European project coordinated by FBK. The candidate might also support activities of European Battery Innovation IPCEI project (https://www.ipcei-batteries.eu) aiming at the development of next-generation battery technologies.

The activities of the successful candidate will focus on:
● Techno-economic assessment of energy storage systems (ESS), focusing in particular on HESS, also analyzing optimal revenue stacking strategies and requirements for
participation in energy and grid services markets;

● Designing and modeling optimal management strategies for HESS supported by
custom-developed physics-based or data-driven models;
● Contributing to the design of innovative HESS and BESS;
● Analyzing demonstration data and results;
● Supporting the development of innovative flow battery system designs.

The ideal candidate must have:
● MSc in Energy, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial Engineering or other relevant degrees;
● Solid knowledge on electric power systems, electricity markets and grid balancing services;
● Strong know-how on battery energy storage systems and battery/energy management systems (BMS/EMS), experience on HESS will be highly valued;
● Experience in the techno-economic assessment of energy storage technologies, in
particular batteries or hybrid systems, supported by dedicated opensource tools or
commercial (e.g., DER-VET, Storage-VET, Homer Energy, etc) considering different
applications and grid configurations (e.g., FTM, BTM, off-grid);
● Experience in the development of physics-based or data-driven models supporting the optimal design and real-time management of electrical energy storage technologies, including hybrid systems combining different ESS;
● Ability to work in a collaborative environment, with a strong commitment to achieve
assigned objectives;
● Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks/projects at one time;
● Ability to write technical reports and scientific papers;
● Good knowledge of written and spoken English;
● Good communication and relational skills;

Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:
● PhD Degree in fields related to this call;
● Experience in pilot, demonstration or industrial-scale projects related to BESS deployment and operation;
● Experience in the design of electrochemical reactors (supported by numerical simulation) or in the design and system integration of BESS.

Type of contract: Fixed Term Contract
Gross annual salary: from about € 36.200 to € 41.400, depending on the background of the candidate

Working hours: full-time (38 hours per week)
Start date: January/February 2024
Duration: 2 years
