FBK is a research institution devoted to excellence in research in numerous disciplines and designated to the role of keeping the Autonomous Province of Trento in the mainstream of European and international research. Workplace Description The Centre on Sustainable Energy (SE) supports the development of devices and methods for generation, storage, and distribution of energy solutions at low environmental impact. This will be done in the perspective of energy sustainability, of systems and solutions that respect the environment and the quality of life, of solutions with a lower impact on health and on environmental pollution levels. The ground for the Centre on “Sustainable Energy” is based on the Decarbonization targets, which will demand for more flexibility of the energy system, through new gas and power grids and using energy vectors and storage solutions, as enablers for the wide penetration of renewables. The Center SE is providing support through scientific excellence to the industrial sector and to territorial institutions.
Job Description
FBK-SE is involved in the development of advanced battery technologies, from single cells to large modules and systems. The selected candidate will contribute to projects on the development and testing of functional components/systems of electrochemical technologies for energy storage, including Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs), Solid State Batteries (SSBs) and Lithium Batteries (LIBs). The research activities will focus on: definition of testing protocols based on standards and safety procedures, testing and validation of cells, modules and battery systems, modeling and prototyping of battery stacks/modules, design and optimization of layouts and components.
The job includes the support to the design and realization of new laboratory infrastructures of the Center Sustainable Energy that will be located in Rovereto covering also the selection of the equipment and the organization of the labs.
Within the projects of the Battery Technologies Area, the expected activities will be:
● Define test protocols based on test requirements, design of experiment, applicable standards and safety requirements
● Plan and perform electrochemical characterization and tests on cell, stack/module or/and battery systems, also producing technical reports and deliverables
● Design and test components for redox flow batteries (cells, stacks) also supported by 3D modeling tools
● Design, test and validate new energy storage systems focusing in particular on redox flow batteries and hybrid energy storage systems integrating different ESS
● Design new customized test rigs (mainly for redox flow batteries) and supervise their
construction
● Support the design and implementation of new laboratory infrastructures of the Center Sustainable energy in Rovereto, Progetto Manifattura
● Support the selection and techno-economic evaluation of new laboratory equipment
● Support the preparation of reports and studies for the industrial sector
Job requirements
The Ideal Candidate should have:
● MSc in Mechatronic, Electrical, Chemical Engineering or other relevant or equivalent
degrees;
● Know-how on batteries and electrochemical systems;
● Solid know-how on electrochemical techniques and accelerated tests for batteries based on practical laboratory experience;
● Experience in the design, operation and management of test rigs and testing equipment;
● Experience in battery system design in at least one of the following technologies: RFBs, SSBs, LIBs;
● Experience in the battery industrial sector and related challenges;
● Knowledge of 3D CAD (Solidworks) and CAE tools (e.g., Ansys Workbench, Fluent);
● Skills in data analysis (e.g., python, Origin, etc.);
● High affinity for hands-on activities and the ability to identify and solve problems;
● Good knowledge of written and spoken English and Italian
● Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills.
Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:
● PhD in Engineering, Physics, or other related degrees with specialization on batteries.

Gross annual salary: from about € 36.200 to € 41.400, depending on the background of the candidate
