Job description 

We are experiencing a strong expansion in our hydrogen projects, covering the whole value chain, from policy and strategy, through to project implementation. This means we have a great opportunity for an experienced engineer in hydrogen / power to grow their career with us. The successful candidate would be leading and delivering a range of real-world hydrogen and power projects as well as helping shape the future growth of our hydrogen portfolio.  

Examples of tasks you will be working on could include: 

  • Engineering, strategic and techno-economic work 
  • Involvement in Business Development and leading bids, with both private and public sector customers across a number of geographies 
  • Project leadership 
  • Team development, growing our capabilities, developing junior staff 
  • Intra Ricardo business hydrogen team working, including lifecycle assessment, certification, heat, and transport. 
  • Hydrogen production feasibility, concept, and owner’s consultant 
  • Green hydrogen energy balance, supply, renewables 
  • Local, national and supranational hydrogen (and related energy vector) policies and strategies 
  • Decarbonisation of transport, industry and energy for private and public customers 
  • Green hydrogen use cases, including transport, energy and feedstocks 

The position would suit applicants with the following (essential requirements): 

  • Knowledge of one or more hydrogen systems / technologies 
  • Good knowledge of the wider hydrogen economy, global landscape and key potential users 
  • Strong background in mechanical, electrical or process engineering 
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to write for and present to different audiences 
  • The ability to breakdown complex research questions, think creatively and solve novel problems 
  • Strong project and people leadership skills 

Desirable skills and experience 

  • Experience writing proposals and winning public and private sector consultancy projects, or equivalent commercial experience within a supplier 
  • Experience developing energy projects (Pre-FEED, FEED, owner’s engineer / consultant) 
  • Python, Matlab, CAD, plant level design and/or energy system modelling 
  • Site experience 

Fluency in English is essential, capability in French, Spanish, or Portuguese is desirable. 

About you
The successful candidate must be experienced in a technical role or as an engineer with a track record in hydrogen projects. You will take responsibility for delivering to the highest standards whether as project manager or technical expert. 

We need an excellent communicator who can explain complex ideas. You will be confident in front of clients and your reports are clear and easy to read. You will work collaboratively with a wide range of experts from across the company and in partner organisations. You will be able to travel to sites in the UK and overseas when required.    

You will be keen to further your career as well as mentor junior members of the team and we will help you develop in both technical and professional areas. 

Note: we will be recruiting one candidate, based in the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, or in South Africa (Johannesburg only). 

The team
The Power Planning & Solutions team comprises a group of highly experienced professionals specialising in techno-economic, engineering and management consultancy services for the energy sector. We have an increasing portfolio of hydrogen projects and opportunities, covering high level strategy and more in-depth feasibility work in topics such as green hydrogen generation (and the associated need for renewables), hydrogen systems, and uses of hydrogen in transport and as a feedstock. This is a relatively new area, and already has a strong start with many projects already completed and underway.
