Job Description: Senior Process Engineer

The Senior Process Engineer will provide technical leadership for multiphase balance-of-plant process areas to support scale up of our technology platform. We are searching for an engineer who has applicable process engineering experience working with high-temperature multi-phase separation processes.

We are seeking an experienced professional to thrive in our collaborative, dynamic startup environment where we seek creative solutions and still outpace other companies. You will report directly to the VP of Engineering, tackling critical process engineering challenges during the front-end engineering design phase for our scaled-up technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the assessment and selection of technology solutions for scaling up multiphase separation and solids handling & conveyance unit operations (experience with gas/solids separation systems is desirable).
  • Identify and engage with vendors, subject matter expert contractors/consultants, and suppliers.
  • Take charge of the technical aspects of interactions with vendors and suppliers, focusing on trade-off studies and front-end engineering for scale-up design.
  • Offer technical guidance for developing and documenting commissioning plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the operation and maintenance of multiphase separation and solids handling process areas.
  • Actively participate in Process Hazard Analysis and HAZOP exercises as the responsible party for solids separation and handling process areas.
  • Provide technical support for the creation of internal process engineering design packages and validate deliverables received from external contractors, which may include Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Mass Balances, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and trade-off studies.
  • In a startup environment, be prepared to fulfill other duties as assigned or as needed to support the team in a fast-paced and dynamic setting.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proficient in the design, selection, and operation of multiphase (gas/solid) separation and heat exchange unit operations and equipment.
  • Capable of designing and selecting solid powder handling equipment for industrial-scale systems.
  • Familiarity with industry codes, regulations, standards, and best practices related to solids handling equipment and dust management techniques.
  • Preferred 2-3 years of experience as a process engineer specializing in the development of innovative industrial technology.
  • Strong asset: Experience in the carbon black industry and/or pyrolysis processes.
  • Skilled in preparing technical scope of work for Request for Proposal (RFP) packages, with expertise in client-EPC consultancy engagements (experience from both client and EPC perspectives is advantageous).
  • Proficient in engineering project cost estimation standards.
  • Competent in using process simulation tools such as PROMAX, HYSYS, and/or ASPENPLUS.
  • Extensive experience in reading, defining, developing, and interpreting Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Mass Balances, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Experience in conducting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and HAZOP Studies.
  • Previous experience in specifying and selecting process equipment, valves, and instrumentation, specifically for multiphase (gas/solid) separation.
