The Centre on Sustainable Energy (SE) supports the development of devices and methods for generation, storage, and distribution of energy solutions at low environmental impact. This will be done in the perspective of energy sustainability, of systems and solutions that respect the environment and the quality of life, of solutions with a lower impact on health and on environmental pollution levels. The ground for the Centre on “Sustainable Energy” is based on the Decarbonization targets, which will demand for more flexibility of the energy system, through new gas and power grids and using energy vectors and storage solutions, as enablers for the wide penetration of renewables. The Center SE is providing support through scientific excellence to the industrial sector and to territorial institutions.

Job Description
FBK-SE is involved related to the development of hydrogen production from water to steam. Main tasks are developing functional components/systems of electrochemical technologies for H2 production, including low (PEM, Proto Exchange Membrane; ALK, Alkaline; AEM, Anionic Exchange Membrane) and high-temperature technologies (SOC, Solid Oxide Cells, MCFC, Molten Carbonate and PCC Proton Conductive Cell). The work package includes four different activities focused on: multiscale and multicomponent modelling of the electrochemical system, design and optimization of materials, layouts, and components, prototyping of novel solutions, testing and validation, as well as the definition of guidelines for upscaling and manufacturing enhancements of electrochemical Technologies towards TRL9 and MRL9. 

The job includes the support to the design and realization of novel laboratory infrastructures of the Center Sustainable Energy that will be located in Rovereto.

In this context, we are looking for an Technologist who will support the above-mentioned project with the following activities: 

  • Support on the definition of infrastructure scheme of novel facility, through continuous confrontation of supplier and contractors.
  • Definition of requirements and specification of equipment for the testing and characterization system and component for H2 sector
  • Support to the test bench development and construction (safety analysis, Mass/energy balance, list of requirements) 
  • Development for Design of Experiment and testing protocol 
  • Produce reports, deliverables and technical review of testing and characterization activities. 
  • Support to reports and studies for the industrial sector
  • Support the design and implementation of new laboratory infrastructures of the enter Sustainable energy in Rovereto, Progetto Manifattura

Job requirements 

The Ideal Candidate have:

  • MSc in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.
  • Experience in laboratory setups
  • Experience in procedure and testing activity in laboratory for hydrogen technologies
  • Familiar with water electrolysis and fuel cell technologies and its industry
  • Ability to write technical reports and scientific papers
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English (equal to or exceed level B2)
  • Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills

Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:

  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, or other related degrees. 
  • Experience with RCS for testing protocol and hydrogen characterization facility’s design
  • Experience in public funded research projects.

Type of contract: fixed-term contract
Working hours: full-time (38 h per week)
Start date: January 2024
Duration: 24 months
Gross annual salary: about € 36.200
