25 March 2024During its annual conference, BMW presented its vision in terms of energy transition, unveiling the Neue Klasse
The online conference provided an update on the new Neue Klasse platform, which comes into force in 2025 and will enable the rapid deployment of 6 new electric models. BMW still aims to make half of its sales electric by 2030. But CEO Olivier Zipse acknowledged that demand was not linear and that the group was trying to be as flexible as possible. . His intervention can be found here .
During the question-and-answer session, we were able to directly question the President of the group Olivier Zipse. We asked him if a decision had been made about releasing a fuel cell model. He told us that hydrogen was the fifth element of his strategy. There is gasoline, diesel, hybrid, battery electric and therefore hydrogen. For Mr. Zipse, there are regions of the world where this type of propulsion is developing more quickly and he cited the case of China. He indicated that it was an increasingly relevant solution, due to the recharge times which are much shorter compared to the battery. “Today, there are still debates around green hydrogen and blue hydrogen,” continued the BMW manager.
According to him, the dominant model will be battery-powered electromobility. But he thinks that hydrogen will be a solution that will have its place “by the end of the decade”. The question to Mr. Zipse was relevant because BMW has already mentioned that the Neue Klasse platform is fuel cell compatible. In addition, the leader has already made several statements on hydrogen, sharing a positive vision on the subject.
