7 March 2024Topsoe has received an environmental permit for its solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) factory, expected to be the “world’s largest” production plant.
Granted by the Danish Environmental Agency, the 500MW electrolyser plant located in Herning, Denmark, is currently under construction and will remain on schedule for 2024 operations.
The approval of the environmental permit proves the facility meets standards of both Danish and EU regulations, including the best available technical solutions, high efficiency in use of power and water and no negative impact on local natural habitats or wildlife.
Topesoe secured €94m ($102.6m) from the EU’s Innovation Fund for the construction of the 500MW capacity factory last December (2023). H2 View understands the investment represented the largest in Topsoe’s history, potentially supporting plans to scale beyond 500MW to 5GW.
